If theres significant rain ahead of or instead of the ice/snow, then trib flows could be on the rise and going off color. More upcoming windy systems produce stirred inshore water which releases river scent so expect more incoming big fish! But with cooler temps this week, the water temp has finally started dropping. And really you may not want to give up completely on salmon efforts just yet. Civilian small boat trollers reported to be having good brown trout action so that tells me the land lubber casting chances should be good too. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. The week ahead looks mostly clear with seasonal temps and then colder again toward the end of the week. King salmon are scheduled for release today, that effort under the directive of the local charter community. Any significant precipitation will quickly raise all the trib flows up again with the chance for off color flows. Look for a good water flow window possibly in the Genny while the Niagara remains a tough pill thanks to a windy open Lake Erie. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Future near term forecast will not make for any new ice. Forecast ahead thru the end of the weekend and into begin part of next week is a little warmer but still dropping back down below freezing at night. Guys may wind up on the Oak after finding icing conditions otherwise. All the waterways are wide open to fish with no icing to worry about for now. The canal season for navigation ended October 13th and some sections are being lowered. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. Most fish came from 50-90 down (44 degrees to 60-degree water) under 74-degree surface waters. Look for flows maintained around the slightly high/slightly stained for now. The rain is Lake Effect so as is often the case with snow most of it goes south of the area. The Clubs cooperation with out of the area fishermen is truly above board and greatly appreciated by all! All the water is open to fish with some bank ice here and there in slack water areas. Free reign for trout and salmon moving up and down the waterway of the turbine channel gives so many more angling opportunities immediately and in the future. Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. We recommend wearing cleats and to always be careful crossing. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Canal water is still high from our rainfall. Flows in the Oak have retreated some to slightly high and slightly stained. Today the salmon did not disappoint us! Lake Alice ice cover is probably days away from going away. Approx 100,000+ King salmon and 10,000 15,000 steelhead are placed in the net pens for hopeful imprinting on the Oak Orchard. Will you be there when a chromer moves upstream? A couple anglers reported when flows came down thanks to turbine rack cleaning it revealed strong numbers of browns and some steelhead nearer the dam, even if they hadnt been good biters prior. Other area smaller tribs should be retreating toward medium or lower to moderate and slightly stained. The area received a few inches of wet snow and sleet thru the end of the past week. Fishing pressure is real light I saw just one car on the Oak. Best spoon is a gold laser spook. The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Thankful for that continued Erie Canal water feed for select tribs as the forecasted precipitation at this time not likely to cause a big change in trib flows. Some days guys seem to do OK and other days are slower. Oak Orchard River Salmon Fishing (Any Cat Fish at the Dam?) Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. Thanks to losing the Canal feed/winter drainage, flows in the Oak are real low. Charter Boat Fishing - Fish Oak Orchard Saturday afternoon we fished 150-200 in water a few miles west of Port. Water level fluctuations are still common thanks to hydropower operations and at least in the downstream fast water areas when flows are reduced, theres been just a handful of mostly browns revealed. Remember you still have to get out and fish Come experience great fishing as it takes place instead of solely relying and waiting on internet reports. Anglers on the Oak reported small pods of Kings on the move thru the fast water areas yesterday. A couple of reports thru yesterday mentioned some hook ups on smaller browns and steelhead. Theres been some water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations already and look for that to continue with almost daily fluctuations expected due to leaf fall or windy conditions.
